Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) -With summer celebrations underway, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding everyone to be extra cautious with fireworks, campfires, and other fire sources to help prevent wildfires.
MDC officials say fireworks should never be used near dry grass or leaves, and you should always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Fireworks are also not allowed at any conservation areas, and local bans may apply. Be smart with outdoor burning. Dry grass, hot temperatures, low humidity, and wind can quickly turn a small flame into a dangerous wildfire.
If you start a fire, even accidentally, you’re responsible for the damage. Avoid parking or driving over tall grass, which can catch fire from your car’s undercarriage. Off-road vehicles should have spark arresters and carry fire extinguishers. Campfires should always be kept small and watched closely. Clear the area around the fire, never use flammable liquids, and fully put it out, even if you’re just stepping away for a few minutes.
Call 911 immediately if a fire gets out of control. If you suspect arson, report it anonymously at 800-392-1111.
