St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - The damage survey for the May 16 tornado has now concluded, revealing a nearly 23-mile path from Clayton, Missouri, northeast through parts of St. Louis and into Illinois.
The tornado first touched down in Clayton and traveled northeast at about 55 mph, expanding to a maximum width of one mile as it moved through northern St. Louis city. Crossing the Mississippi River, the tornado continued into Illinois, finally lifting near Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The tornado was rated EF3, with wind speeds reaching up to 152 mph.
Meteorologists note that it is possible multiple tornadic circulations were involved in the event. Further analysis will be conducted to determine whether this was a single long-track tornado or a series of tornadoes.
Five people were killed from this storm.
